The narrator, who is not a "normal" person, is on a journey to see the Northern Lights in Alaska, despite the coldest winter in ten years. He meets his storm-chasing friends, Daren and Spence, in Fairbanks, Alaska. They plan to capture the Northern Lights from the plane and later from the ground. Despite less than ideal weather, they manage to capture the Aurora with their cameras.
They decide to stay at "The Runway House", a cozy place with an amazing view of the Alaska Range. They encounter a few caribou grazing for road salt along the way. The narrator compares the Alaskan scenery to Bob Ross's paintings, as Bob Ross learned to paint in Alaska.
They encounter a snowbank that stops them from reaching the summit of Denali, but they manage to capture a great view. They decide to work smarter, not harder, and continue their journey. They face another wave of weather, mostly high clouds, but the ice crystals in these cirrus clouds create an 'upper tangent arc' above the Sun.
They decide to sleep and prepare for the next day. They find out if Northern Lights are visible from Paxson, Alaska, and they manage to capture the Aurora. A very strong storm rolls into the Alaska Range, trapping them in the valley. They decide to take the scenic route through the Chugach range, to Wassila, and back around to Denali again.
They manage to capture the Northern Lights from the plane again on their way home, proving that if you can make the most of the weather in Alaska, you can see Northern Lights any night of the winter. The narrator concludes by expressing his desire to return home where Spring seems like less of a far-off dream.
