The US Department of Defense (DoD) held a press briefing to discuss various topics. The Secretary of Defense, Austin, met with Bahrain's Crown Prince and Prime Minister to discuss a comprehensive security integration and prosperity agreement. The DoD also released a response to Congress on space policy and strategy to protect US national security interests in space.
Additionally, the DoD is working with the UK and Australia on the AUKUS partnership, which aims to promote a free, secure, and open Indo-Pacific region. The Secretary and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs will travel to Germany to host a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.
The US has not restarted counter-terrorism operations in Niger, but has commenced ISR flights for force protection purposes. The DoD is also working to address the issue of Senator Tuberville's hold on military promotions, which is causing delays and impacting readiness and national security.
Other topics discussed included the potential for a conflict with China, the establishment of a US Space Force in Japan, and the DoD's preparedness for a potential government shutdown. The DoD is taking steps to mitigate the impacts of a shutdown, but hopes to avoid it altogether.
