Lore of the Dungeons - Zelda: The Wind Waker - Summary

Summary

The Wind Waker, a game set in the same world as Ocarina of Time but centuries later, follows the story of a boy who loses his sister and discovers a forgotten kingdom. The game's dungeons, each with their unique themes and challenges, are central to the narrative.

The first dungeon, Dragon Roost Cavern, is found inside a volcanic island and serves as the home of the Rito tribe. The dungeon is a rite of passage for Rito children and is at the heart of Rito culture. The interior of the dungeon is heavily based on the music from Dadoko's Cavern, found in Ocarina of Time, and is filled with depictions of a dragon, symbolizing Valu, a dragon-like sky spirit. The dungeon also features rocks carved into jagged teeth and menacing visages, depicting a dangerous Serpentine Dragon.

The second dungeon, the Tower of the Gods, is a vertical dungeon where Link needs to climb from the bottom to the top, symbolizing his journey to gain the gods' approval. The Tower of the Gods is filled with mysterious ancient technology and is marked with similar constellation patterns as the Sheikah Shrines from Breath of the Wild. The boss of this dungeon is Godan, a machine designed to be the final test for potential heroes.

The third dungeon, the Earth Temple, is a place designed to house a sage for an age. The temple is filled with rows of stone coffins, ancient crumbling columns, and passageways covered in depictions of skulls and scythes, giving it the feeling of a mausoleum or underground catacombs. The temple was taken over by an evil creature, Jalhala, and is now infested with moblins, Ganondorf's elite minions.

The final dungeon, Ganondorf's Tower, is found in the sunken Kingdom of Hyrule below the surface of the great sea. The tower was once an impenetrable fortress that served as Ganon's base of operations during his war against Hyrule centuries ago. The tower's basement is very similar to Ganon's Castle from Ocarina of Time, and it features four subsections themed after the main four bosses that Ganon created.
