Global National: Sept. 9, 2023 | Powerful Morocco earthquake stuns nation as death toll rises - Summary

Summary

terms of reaching out or anything like
that

I think a lot of people are looking at
that apology and wondering if it's enough
given the gravity of what happened and the
impact it had on you how do you feel about
that

yeah you know it's it's it's always a
difficult conversation to have because
there is there is no guidebook on how to
handle these things every individual that
that goes through something like this is
going to be different in terms of what
they're looking for in terms of the
resolution in terms of the punishment and
for myself it's always been about
education and about awareness and making
sure that when these issues come to light
that they're handled properly and that
the end goal is is making sure that
nobody else has to go through this and I
don't know if a ten million dollar
apology would have been right if it would
have been wrong if it would have been too
much if it would have been too little I
think it's just about educating and
making sure that people understand the
impact of their words and their actions
and they're never put in this situation
to begin with that's always been my goal
and my mindset throughout this process
and I think I think everyone's entitled
to their opinion on the apology and and
how it was handled I know for myself it's
been a long journey it's been a long
process and I've tried to handle it to
the best of my ability and I think I
think you know it's it's just it's a
situation that's going to take time and
you know hopefully it's something that we
can use as a learning tool in the future
so that something like this doesn't
happen to another player in the future

you've been actively working towards
promoting diversity inclusion in hockey
can you tell us a bit about your efforts
in that regard
yeah you know I've been very fortunate to
partner with the Calgary Flames I've been
very fortunate to partner with various
other organizations and individuals that
are looking to to make a change in the
game of hockey and really make the game
for everyone I'm excited to be working
with a group called Breakaway that that
is really looking to make hockey a game
for everybody and really making it you
know a family atmosphere and making sure
that everybody has an opportunity to
enjoy the game so I think when you look
at some of the organizations that are
involved some of the individuals that are
involved in a you know I think that's the
first step it's it's it's not a one-man
job it's it's a job that's going to take
collective effort from all areas and you
know I'm excited to be a part of it and
hopefully you know it's it's a it's a
project that we can really make a
difference

and it's great to see you taking a
leadership role in that so finally I want
to ask you about the broader issue of
racism in hockey what do you think needs
to change in the sport to make it more
inclusive and to address these issues
yeah you know I think the first thing
that needs to change is is really
understanding the impact of words and
actions and you know the time for
ignorance in our game is is over and and
it's something that I'm I'm really trying
to help with and I think a big thing that
I've learned throughout my my journey
through this whole situation is is really
making sure that there's a protocol in
place for when these things happen
because they will happen in the future
whether it's in hockey whether it's in any
other sport it will happen and you know I
think if there's a protocol in place then
you know the the victims of these of
these situations have something to fall
back on and have something to look to for
for for justice and for resolution and I
think that's that's been a big thing for
myself is you know trying to create a
platform and awareness for players and
individuals to come forward and and not
be scared to come forward and and
hopefully you know that's that's that's
the next big step in in the game of
hockey is is is really just understanding
and not letting these things happen in
the first place but having something in
place when they do

absolutely and I think your advocacy is
helping to shine a light on these issues
and hopefully drive change thank you so
much for joining us today and sharing
your perspective I appreciate it

thank you very much for having me
